It’s My Husband’s Birthday Today So I Wrote Him a Love Letter

Dear Matt,

Today is your birthday — HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I decided I would give you a homemade gift this year — you know, something from the heart. However, we both know that I can’t bake (like at ALL — remember that “sponge” cake I made you? It was kind of flat…and hard…) and I’m certainly not talented with a glue gun either — so my medium of choice for this wondrous gift is going to be words!

Which is almost ironic, because you are not a fan of words. At least, you’re not a fan of the long winded text messages I people send (and yes, it really does take five text messages in a row to tell you what I want for dinner). You don’t like to mince words; you’re a get-to-the-point kind of guy. You text-speak, and I find that completely endearing. I mean, you enjoyed The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Dragonlance series and you are one of the most intelligent men that I have ever known, but you don’t like waiting a long time to find out what’s going to happen. You want to know what I want for dinner the first text, and I get that. However, I consider it my duty as your wife to drive you a little batty by forcing you to read several paragraphs about how much you mean to me. Besides, it’s good to hear these things. I think hearing “I love you” on it’s own all the time and not really getting into the why’s is kind of sad. The why’s should be celebrated. You should know the why’s; you should know how much you mean to me, so I’m going to tell you…okay? Okay.

But the thing is…I don’t think there are enough words in the English Oxford dictionary* to illustrate just how much you mean to me. You are a remarkable father. Our boys look up to you so much. Nolan has always wanted to be a daddy, just like you, and Archer thinks you walk on water. I see it too; the way they look at you. They admire you, and so do I. It is literally the coolest thing ever to see you through the kids’ eyes.

Not only are you an incredible father, but you work so hard to provide for us, and you let me chase this crazy dream of mine to be an author and spend my days writing. You support me, financially as well as emotionally. And I know — that’s not easy. It’s not easy to be the primary breadwinner and to take a loss when unexpected business expenses arise on my end.

In addition; you have loved me in a way that no one else ever has. You have all of my heart. You have shown me passion and adoration, fervor and strength. You make me feel breathless; drunk on love. I am able to write love stories the way I do — with such emotion and heart — because you have shown me what it feels like. You inspire me. You are my muse.

So when I tell you that I couldn’t do this without you, without your support — I mean that in every sense of the word. I consider you to be my best friend; my teammate. My comrade in arms. You’ve still the first person I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last one I think about before I fall asleep. One of my most favourite places to be is in your arms. Even after telling you all this…I still feel like it falls short. It doesn’t fully encompass the depth of what you mean to me.

1G5A8743Well, I guess two words just might come close; always, and everything. This world is a better place because you are in it.

Love Always,

Lil Hottie**

*Sidenote: I don’t have an English Oxford dictionary. I feel like a fraud as a writer. How do I not have this in my office? SHAME

**Sidenote: That’s the name that he saved my phone number under on his phone when we first met.

  1. I don’t own a dictionary either. At all. I used to have several, but it’s so much faster to type it into the dictionary website or app of your choice. And I like fast. I’m with Matt! That said, Mike grumbles about my long, multiple texts too… Must be one of those Mars/Venus things.

Happy birthday Matt, and happy love to you both! You too are so damn cute and it’s been beautiful cheering you on from the “Booth” days.
