EXCERPT:

I placed slices of ham in the muffin tray and poured in a mixture of green pepper, onion, cheese, and the fresh farm eggs I’d collected from the hen house earlier. Egg muffins were the easiest thing to make when in a hurry, and they could be quickly reheated in the microwave whenever my dad and brothers got hungry.

While I was waiting for the egg muffins to cook, my phone rang. I pulled it out of my back pocket and answered it. “Good morning lover.” I smiled into the phone.

“Morning gorgeous.” Brock’s voice was warm and affectionate, and it caused a profound ache to resonate in my heart at the exact same time it soothed me. “How’s your morning been?”

“Busy,” I admitted, chewing on my lower lip as I looked out the window over the sink. I could see the milking shed and the cow barn perfectly. I couldn’t see my father or brothers, but I knew they were all busy inside, hard at work milking cows and monitoring their health. Gordon and Tommy would head off to their regular jobs, but Ben’s full-time work was the farm. “I’m just making breakfast before Sue and Elle pick me up. We’re going shopping to get gifts for the kids at the pancake breakfast this Saturday.”

“Sounds fun.” I could almost hear him smiling.

“Yeah.” I exhaled, catching sight of Dad as he lead a large group of cows back to the barn.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Dad seems a bit more stressed out than usual, and quieter. He mentioned that he’s got some appointments today in town, and . . . I don’t know, just the way he said it made me worry.”

“I’m sure everything’s fine,” Brock reassured me, his voice gentle. “It’s a stressful time of year, and it’s probably never easy on him . . .” Brock trailed off, and I knew he was referring to my mom. It must be especially hard for my dad. Christmas was her favourite time of year, and the accident that took her from us had happened in the winter.

“You’re right.” I sighed, wishing again that Dad had found it in him to move on, if only so that someone else could shoulder some of the stress he carried around. Burdening his kids had never been my dad’s style, but he also didn’t have many friends outside of Sue. He wasn’t as social as he used to be.

“Try not to worry about it,” Brock added.

“I’ll try.” I huffed. “Thirteen more days until you’re home . . . God, I can’t wait Brock. I miss you so much, and I’m really horny.” He inhaled sharply in response, then let out a low moan that made the fire in the pit of my belly grow. I knew he’d make me pay for all the teasing I’d done the past month, and I was ready for it.

“Okay, well, I can’t exactly help you with that, but if you need another twenty-minutes to flick your bean before we go . . .” Elle’s voice had me whipping around quickly. She was standing by the kitchen doorway, laughing her ass off at me.

“Shut up.” I scowled, my face reddening. Despite how mortified I was that Elle had overheard me, I was significantly less mortified than I would have been had someone else walked in.

Brock was laughing too. “All right babe, I’ve got to get to work. Have a good day shopping. I’ll give you a call tonight.”

“Okay, bye Brock. I love you,” I told him, still glaring at my friend.

The buzzer went off, and I slid my hand into an oven mitt before opening the stove and removing the tray of egg muffins.

Elle sniffed the air and crossed over, licking her lips.

“None for you.” I slapped her hand away. “You spoiled my morning call with your smart ass mouth.”

“Sorry,” Elle winced, her eyes full of apology. “I know you don’t get a lot of time to talk to him . . . I’m an asshole.”

“Yes you are,” I agreed with a sigh, my shoulders dropping. “Thirteen more days,” I repeated, mostly to myself. Elle sent me a sympathetic smile. I thought I saw a glint in her eyes, and her mouth twitched slightly, but before I could question her, she had grabbed a paper towel and an egg muffin, and was racing out the door.

“Come on! Mom’s waiting!” she called out over her shoulder. Shaking my head, I grabbed another two egg muffins for Sue and myself.

In the four years since Elle Thompson’s first love broke her heart, she hasn’t been able to get over him and move on. Luckily, a tempting new romance begins to simmer—but then fate throws Elle and Braden back together again, and Elle is trapped between her past and her possible future.

Braden Miller regretted pushing Elle away from him the moment it happened. Blindsided by grief, he lost sight of what and who mattered and quickly hit rock bottom. Since then, he’s kept his head down and worked on becoming a man he can be proud of. But coming home to Parry Sound means seeing Elle again. As they’re constantly pushed in the same direction, Braden realizes that he has to make amends with more than just his family.

Elle’s yearning for both men in her life intensifies. Wavering between loyalty to one and memories of a long-ago flame with another, she struggles with her feelings.
